Celebrating the stunning, long-range views and creating accessible outdoor spaces that seamlessly integrate into the natural surroundings were the central design objectives of this residential estate in North Asheville. Terracing the backyard created gathering areas around a central fireplace, allowed space for a hot tub nestled into the hillside, and offered a variety of vantage points where the homeowners and their guests can enjoy the spectacular views of downtown Asheville or soak in the sunsets of the beautiful surrounding mountains. Stone stairs and rock outcroppings connect the spaces while accentuating the feeling that the terraces were carved out of the mountain. We designed an arrival sequence with a new driveway and inviting entrance courtyard, allowing easy access to the home and the expansive outdoor spaces.
This project also reflects a partnership with the City of Asheville Tree Commission, which approved our proposal to replace hazardous, overgrown, and unhealthy pines with more ecologically diverse, native species of canopy trees. The final product is a thoughtfully-designed landscape that complements the natural beauty of Asheville, welcoming guests with open arms.
