OLA was honored to be awarded this unique commission through a competitive design process. Our approach provided an integrated and historically relevant response to the adaptation and enhancement of this 1920s Country Place Era estate and landscape—still in the same family since its inception in the roaring 20s. We collaborated with the inspiring client and their exceptionally talented design and construction team. Working with the team, we coordinated a design that honors and enhances the property’s rich history. Rather than attempting to maximize each individual aspect, we applied a holistic design sensibility, seamlessly blending old and new elements into one cohesive experience.
Creating a more ceremonial arrival to the house that welcomes the family and guests was accomplished by layering perfectly proportioned patterns of new paving transitions, columns, steps, terraces, walls, and site lighting, creating opportunities to pause and reflect on the history of the place and connect with the natural surroundings. Various site components were meticulously detailed to emphasize the axial sight line relationship to the house. We also intersected the formal grass lawns with the textures of varying native plants to support the natural ecology and foster pollinators. Every design decision resulted from many thoughtful site visits, careful collaboration, and an iterative process to ensure the final product carefully honored the legacy of this historic estate.
